"A Million Ways to Die in the West" Review

"A Million Ways to Die in the West" Review

6/10

2014
A Seth MacFarlane Film
Protagonist(s): Seth MacFarlane, Charlize Theron, Giovani Ribisi, Sarah Silverman
Antagonist(s): Liam Neeson, Neil Patrick Harris
Run-time: 1 hour 56 minutes

When a cowardly sheep farmer from Old Stump is dumped by his girlfriend, he considers running off to San Francisco but the arrival of another woman upsets his plans and makes him think that it's possibly not a bad thing.

A decent premise and plot almost supported mostly by what passes for humour. There were several good jokes and cameo appearances, such as Christopher Loyd in his most famous role of 'Doc' from Back to the Future, but the majority of the supposed comedy seemed to ignore the ancient and time tested art of 'suggestion', preferring to show every gory and disgusting detail as they happen rather than off camera.

I must admit that I had a few chuckles and snorts of contained mirth during moments of pure slapstick and satire, but as the couple four seats away from me in the theatre proved; you need to be stoned out of your gourd to find this hilarious from end to end.

The plot was decent for a parody of Westerns, and some of the visual effects were not only very well done but well timed. But other than that, I left the theatre as quickly as possible.

While I think this film should be seen at least once, it will be quite a while before I will see it again voluntarily.
