"Cats & Dogs" Review

"Cats & Dogs" Review

8/10

2001
A Lawrence Guterman Film
Protagonist(s): Tobey Maguire, Alec Baldwin, Jeff Goldblaum, Elizabeth Perkins, Alexander Pollock
Antagonist(s): Sean Hayes, Jon Lovitz

Since Ancient Egypt, cats and dogs have competed for the affections or subservience of humans. It is a secret war waged unbeknown to humans, and when a human scientist is close to curing dog allergies a megalomaniac cat decides to steal and reverse it. Dog-kind must put an end to this villainy, but a case of mistaken identity has an untrained puppy assigned as guard dog for the scientist.

This family film has plenty of cartoon elements, including comedic elements and physics.

The technology is something straight out of James Bond, and the weapons testing facilities of the dogs seem like a direct copy of Q Labs.

The mix of trained animals, puppets and digital animation mostly makes for a good show and convincing facial expressions. Though it must be said that the dog puppets are not quite as convincing.

The plot is good, the acting talent is acceptable, the comedy is good, and the effects are mostly good.

I recommend this film for any family.
