"Firefly" Review Season 01, Episode 14, Objects in Space

The reality of River comes to light in a very unnerving manner, and with the fear of the crew still cooling off a bounty hunter manages to get aboard to apprehend the Tams.

While originally not aired in its proper order, this episode is the last one of the series, and was the episode during which Mr Whedon was informed that the show was cancelled.

The episode also introduces the term Reader; someone who can hear or see the thoughts of others. Synonym: Psychic. The introduction of the term also includes theories of why the Alliance would want to have one, and why they cut open her brain in such specific ways. The revelation also brings up worries for the safety of the crew, as River is not entirely in control of her actions; at times incapable of distinguishing between fantasy, stray thoughts and present time.

Had this series not been cancelled, this episode could have been the launching point for somewhat more extreme adventures, on the level of the film Serenity which came out a few years after.
