"Spider-Man" Review

"Spider-Man" Review

7/10

2002
A Sam Raimi Film
Protagonist(s): Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco
Antagonist(s): Willem Dafoe
Run-time: 2 hours 1 minute

When the bullied, shy and introverted Peter Parker is bitten by a genetically modified spider he suddenly finds himself with powers and abilities which resemble the best abilities of the Araneae species.

For those of you who are familiar with the story, this should be a simple repetition as has been done so many times before in the Marvel Universe. If you have never heard this before, shame on you. If you feel that it resembles Harry Potter, then shame on you for not knowing Spider-Man first.

It is interesting to see the modernized source of a known hero's powers. Understanding of radiation and such possibly made it less attractive to use as a source, while genetics are still a far greater playground from which to draw inspiration.

It also has no reference to X-Men which came out two years earlier, and indicates that this film does not belong in the X-Men film universe.

It is an entertaining film, and I recommend it for Marvel Enthusiasts.
