"Junior" Review

"Junior" Review

9/10

1994
An Ivan Reitman Film
Protagonist(s): Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny DeVito, Emma Thompson
Antagonist(s): Frank Langella
Run-time: 1 hour 49 minutes

When the FDA approval for their experimental fertility drug is denied and the funding pulled, Dr Hesse (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and Dr Arbogast (Danny DeVito) decide to take their results to an international pharmaseutical company and in order to have a human subject to prove the effectiveness of the drug inject a fertilized ovum into the belly of Dr Hesse.

The concept of this film is hardly a new one, having been covered in at least two other films within thirty years of this one. That doesn't mean the subject isn't fascinating; another gender barrier broken. I could easily see that were this to become reality then birth rates would initially decline as women demand tit for tat and men refuse. But after a few pioneers start the process more might follow and increase birth rates. However, the cost might be more than the average consumer could afford.

Sociological analysis aside, it is amusing to see Mr Schwarzenegger in such a gentle film.

The plot is straight forward and supported by comedy. The comedy is primarily slap-stick with one or two puns  and double entendre thrown in. The effects are simple but effective. The acting talent is solid.

I recommend this film for all action film enthusiasts with a sense of humour.
