"The Matrix" Review

"The Matrix" Review

8/10

1999
An Andy Wachowski and Lana Wachowski Film
Protagonist(s): Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Ann Moss
Antagonist(s): Hugo Weaving
Run-time: 2 hours 16 minutes

When computer hacker Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves) is contacted mysteriously by an unknown entity with apparent psychic powers on the net his life is turned upside down and reality itself is drawn into question.

Like many, I was taken by this film almost as soon as it came out and though I will not claim that I started questioning whether I was in the Matrix it made me take a closer look at what went on behind the scenes of my life and circle. Others, though I hear it was a small minority, committed heinous crimes and blamed their state of mind on having seen this film much like similar people blame video games for their inappropriate behaviour.

The martial arts are beautifully choreographed even though it is at times plain to see that the actors are hanging on invisible wires. The film made popular a new technique of filming known as "Bullet Vision", where time slows down and the image moves around the central actor/actress in those slowed seconds. Some of the acting talent is a little wooden, but that is a minority which the rest compensate for.

Overall, this film is highly recommended for evenings where fighting and explosions and gun fights are desired.
