"Carcassonne" Review

"Carcassonne" Review

8/10

2000
Developer(s): Klaus-Jürgen Wrede
Publisher(s): Hans im Glück, Z-Man Games, Devir, Rio Grande Games (among others)
Genre: Tile-based
Mode(s): Multiplayer (2-5 players)

This game is different from most games I have played in that rather than have a fixed board there is a starting tile placed on the table and each player draws a fresh tile from the pile to add to that initial tile, while at the same time making sure it matches the conditions set by its neighbours. A road must connect with a road, a wall must connect with a wall, etc.

Each player is assigned a number of coloured pieces in the rough outline of a person, which they can use to occupy territory, thus earning them points.

When there are no more tiles, the game is ended and the player with the highest combined score wins.

There are many expansions to this game, each adding more complexity to the game in some way.

I love this game, and were it not for the need to have other players I would play it by myself all the time.
