Lillesand, Norway
Band: Jim Johanssen, Jan Ove Johanssen, Dene O'Neill
On the evening of Tuesday the thirty-first, local Country fans, and friends and family of those associated with the production assembled outside the old movie theatre in Lillesand, which had been decorated with bales of hay and a red carpet held down with old horse shoes.
The ticket claimed the concert would begin at 19:00 (7pm), but the star of the show did not arrive until five minutes later, in a yellow caddilac along with the entire production crew of his music video, which premiered that same evening.
The teatre was far from jam packed, despite its seating capacity of under two hundred and the confirmed love of country music in the southern part of Norway, but as far as I can tell the advertising was done as cheaply as possible, relying mostly on Facebook and word of mouth.
A small note on the location is that is smelled of stale, old buttered popcorn which stuck to the back of my throat with every breath. But I suppose the concert cannot be criticised for that.
As far as the volume is concerned, it was apparently set for outdoor stadium rather than an enclosed room, and was possibly quite a few decibels louder than it should have been for a crowd of this size. But this is normal as far as my concert-going experience tells me.
'Hawk' states repeatedly that he wishes to carry on the 'Outlaw' traditions of country music, and has at one point or another performed with one of Waylon Jennings' old bands (and they were apparently in attendance somewhere in the theatre).
The skill of this musician is unquestionably good. He tickled the board and strings with such skill and precision that you could hear each individual note clearly. He played the crowd almost as well as he did his fender. I, for one, kept wondering if he relied too much on the electric guitar and its clear playful advantages in adding effects and prolonging the notes.
Throughout this rocked out country concert, 'Hawk' demonstrated his skill on the guitar, and proved that he has the technical profficiency to become one of the great names of Country. What is holding him back, among other things, is that he is a little too selective of which venues to perform at his present level of fame. Though the music video should probably add some people to his following.
At the end of the concert came the premiere of the music video and a distribution of thanks in the form of candy, flowers and a certificate to each cast member and crew member involved.
All in all, a successful concert even with the technical difficulties involved in trying to match an ancient DVD player with an equally ancient projector for playing the video.
