"Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag" Review

Mode(s): Single-player, multiplayer

Edward Kenway had dreams and ambitions beyond his legitimate means, and as such there was only a handful of opportunities to achieve them; drawing sword and raising colours.

While the incredible similarity to its predecessors would make this game lose rating scores, the added mobility and inventive means of killing and open world for sailing more than make up for it.

This game takes place during the golden age of piracy, and the sailing mechanism introduced in the previous game is put to good use as it is a means of travelling much as the horse was in the first games. Added to it is now the option to attack any ship, and raid them; some can even be made to join Kenway's fleet. The game also introduces diving missions and hunting on a grander scale than the previous game.

The fighting mechanism has become more fluid, and the opponents rarely move alone which means the chain of attacks can be interrupted by multiple attacks. While the firing mechanism for pistols is fluid and somewhat real in that multiple guns are needed for multiple shots, it is somewhat less so when it comes to reloading.

The end of the game also approaches very suddenly unless you happen to do EVERY mission and side mission to one hundred percent.

My biggest problem with this game is merely that it is out of order. It should have been released before the previous game, as Edward Kenway is the grandfather of the main protagonist of the last game. But it is not something which will lower my score for this one.

If you liked the last games in the series, then you will love this one. If you haven't played the previous games then I recommend that you do before attempting this one, even though it is not a necessity.
