"Pacific Rim" Review

"Pacific Rim" Review

8/10

2013
A Guillermo del Toro Film
Protagonist(s): Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman
Run-time: 2 hours 12 minutes

For decades humans have imagined alien invasions and their destructive rampage, but there was always one common thread; that they came from space. When massive aliens invade from a dimensional rift between tectonic plates in the Pacific, it catches humanity off guard and worse still conventional arms only have a mild effect. To combat these monstrous threats, the world's countries banded together and constructed robotic battle systems known as Jaeger.

First off, and I will likely not be the first to make the following remark even though I voiced it to my friends before the film was released; this film looks like a rehash of the Anime and Manga series: Neon Genesis Evangelion.I was right. But it seems to have a strong mix of Independence Day as well.

My second statement is that this is not a true story as much as a short one punched up with as many special effects as was possible to cram down our throats, and a few humorous situations which had little if any effect on the plot.

The plot was simple and straight forward; invasion must be stopped, let's nuke 'em. The effects were awesome and fairly lifelike despite their incredible nature. The acting talent was sufficient for the task, and the martial arts were impressive.

If you do not wish to sit through two hours of gigantic monsters, enormous robots or martial arts, then this is not the film for you. However, if you do enjoy those things with a smattering of romance then this is the film for you.
