"Logan's Run" Review

"Logan's Run" Review

8/10

1976
A Michael Anderson Film
Protagonist(s): Michael York, Jenny Agutter, Peter Ustinov
Antagonist(s): Richard Jordan, Roscoe Lee Browne, Michael Anderson Jr
Run-time: 1 hour 59 minutes

After waves of war, famine and over population, humanity moved into domed cities and introduced a dual system of population control. The first being that children are grown from genetic samples of two individuals, and raised in nurseries, keeping control of how many is born. At the age of thirty every individual must turn themselves in to participate in a ritual called the Carousel, which offers a chance of being renewed. However, not all is as it seems.

The basic theme of this film is repeated in "The Island", where people who are more or less ignorant of the outside world are confined, and given a chance for a better life through some form of lottery.

The film contains elements which both were and became classics for plots. The betrayal, sudden change in how the characters view the world, the consequences of indoctrination and innocent ignorance of things we take for granted.

The plot is good, the acting talent is on average a little below par, the effects are painfully obvious and occasionally appears to be sloppy and rushed.

I recommend this film purely for the social concepts, scientific concepts, and occasional nudity.
