"Pay It Forward" Review
10/10
2000
A Mimi Leder Film
Protagonist(s): Haley Joel Osment, Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt, Jay Mohr
Run-time: 2 hours 3 minutes
When a seventh grade class is given an assignment to change the world, meant to invoke deep thought, one observant boy starts a chain of events which ends up being a Motion.
This film revolves around the concept of not closing the loop of charity by reimbursing the one who displayed it, but rather spread it around in a benign pyramid scheme.
To quote Emerson: "In the order of nature we cannot render benefits to those from whom we receive them, or only seldom. But the benefit we receive must be rendered again, line for line, deed for deed, cent for cent, to somebody."
Based on a novel by the same name, written by Catherine Ryan Hyde, this film follows the unknown far reaching consequences of what is perceived by the origin of the notion to be a failure. And as intended the film does awake a sense of purpose in those who watch it.
The effects are good, and rely on what can be called stage tricks; make-up and hidden actions with partly visible results, rather than using computer enhancements and replacements to show gruesome and grizzly scenes. The plot is sound. The drama and romance is predictable.
I recommend this film for anyone who enjoys a bitter-sweet end to their romantic dramas.
Reviewing different things; food, films, music, books, games etc. It is said that those who can't do; teach. Those who can't teach; critique.
