"X-Men: First Class" Review
6/10
2011
A Matthew Vaughn Film
Protagonist(s): James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender
Antagonist(s): Kevin Bacon
Run-time: 2 hours 12 minutes
In 1962 the US Government enlists several mutants to help prevent WWIII.
I mentioned it in the previous film and I'll repeat myself: Why didn't the writers at the very least consult the previous films so they could get their facts straight? There are several gaping plot holes when compared with the previous films, yet as a stand-alone film it could work.
The effects are excellent, the acting talent is acceptable, and seeing the former dancing teenager as a mutant villain dictator is good for a chuckle.
I now will list a few inconsistencies.
Spoilers:
1. In the beginning of X-Men: The Last Stand we see Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart as their characters recruiting Jean Grey to their joined little group of mutants. There is no reference to Jean Grey in this film, and by the end of it Magneto and Xavier are not amicable enough to recruit someone to a joined cause.
2. Yet again there seems to be some confusion as to when McCoy/Beast developed blue fur and animal features. In X-2 he appeared as a normal man in a television interview, and in the next he was blue. In this film he transformed in the middle and it took place well over forty years before the previous change. He does not have the ability to switch back and forth.
3. In this film Xavier and Magneto attempt to recruit Wolverine, yet the Professor doesn't ever mention having met him before. It could be a slip of the mind but unlikely.
4. Emma Frost appears as a full grown adult in this film, yet in X-Men Origins: Wolverine she was a teenager and had no association with Sebastian Shaw or the Hellfire Club.
End Spoilers.
I recommend viewing this film as a stand-alone, not as any part of the X-Men film universe.
