"Looper" Review
8/10
2012
A Rian Johnson Film
Protagonist(s): Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt, Pierce Gagnon
Antagonist(s): Bruce Willis, Jeff Daniels
Run-time: 1 hour 58 minutes
In the future they invented two things of note; time travel, and tracking implants which made it impossible to hide a dead body. Time travel became highly illegal, but wealthy criminal organisations use them to get rid of people. However the limit is thirty years. A representative has been sent back to recruit trigger men who then appear at designated times and places to shoot whatever person appears before them, in exchange for a collection of silver bars strapped to the victim's back. The severence package for these Loopers is to be sent back in time to be killed by themselves with a collection of gold bars strapped to their backs.
The temporal physics in this film seem a bit questionable to my mind. If what is presented is true, then the appearance of an older self would create an alternate reality where the Looper was more careful about choices leading to their retirement and any change made to their younger selves would not affect the older selves which were sent back in time. But then I suppose there are numerous views and theories about time travel and the consequences of such things.
They managed to make Mr Gordon-Levitt look very much like a younger Mr Willis, which is impressive.
The effects are excellent and gritty. The action is of the good old fashioned kind. The plot is knotted and twisted but supported by the effects and action. The acting talent is good.
I recommend this to action film enthusiasts, but don't see it with theoretic physicists with strong views on time travel.
Reviewing different things; food, films, music, books, games etc. It is said that those who can't do; teach. Those who can't teach; critique.
