9/10
2012
A Peter Ramsey Film
Protagonist(s): Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman, Isla Fisher, Dakota Goyo
Antagonist(s): Jude Law
Run-time: 1 hour 37 minutes
It is the job of the Guardians, mythic creatures for various occasions, to safeguard the innocence and happiness of children. But when a long ignored and not liked Pitch Black (the Boogeyman) decides he has had enough of hiding and not being believed in, the Man in the Moon selects a fifth Guardian.
My first impression of this film is that it is an excellent piece of work all round. The animation is excellent, the characters have enough defects to look believable yet enough oomph to be awesome, and the lighting is borderline indistinguishable from the real thing. The story is simple but compelling and filled with intrigue. And it champions the preservation of childlike innocence and curiosity.
My second thought was that Santa Claus seems to have the entire Jamie Hyneman clan working in his shop alongside the elves. I could not keep from smirking in amusement every time the Yetis/Sasquatch appeared on screen.
Overall a very entertaining film.
