"Joe Versus the Volcano" Review

"Joe Versus the Volcano" Review

8/10

1990
A John Patrick Shanley Film
Protagonist(s): Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan
Antagonist(s): Lloyd Bridges
Run-time: 1 hour 42 minutes

When Joe Banks (Tom Hanks) is diagnosed with a painless but very deadly illness which only affords him six months to live he accepts a job which has only one task; jump into an active volcano as a human sacrifice.

This is almost a parody of the normal romantic films involving Mr Hanks and Ms Ryan. It involves the same elements of meeting and falling in love. But the circumstances and events surrounding the tried and true scenes are borderline insane and only rivalled by the 'Airplane' or 'Hotshots' style of comedy.

The effects are simple. The plot is insane. The comedy is excellent, though a little laboured some places. The romance is cliched. The acting talent is solid.

I recommend this film for anyone who enjoy a good romantic parody.
