A Ted Kotcheff Film
Protagonist(s): Tom Selleck, Don Ameche, Anne Jackson
Run-time: 1 hour 47 minutes
When stockbroker Jon Aldrich (Tom Selleck) hears that his mother has taken ill, he drops everything to make sure she gets the best care he can afford while at the same time reconnect with his father. However, the timing is rather unfortunate.
This is without a doubt one of my top twenty favourite films of all times, simply because of the slapstick comedy which permeates the entire reel. I first saw this before I knew any English, but even so managed to understand some of the less subtle neuances because the comedy is mostly physical rather than verbal.
The acting is brilliant even if Tom Selleck plays the same role he always plays (only with more screaming and falling), the chain of events is credible and well timed, and the conclusion fits within the accepted parameters of what is constituted as a happy ending.
Some of the content may be a bit crude, but there is no full frontal nudity or graphic violence outside one incident as a result of some poorly chosen words.
If you want to spend one and three quarters of an hour laughing or chortling or smirking, then this is the film for you.
